Race car driver Lewis Strang surveys the layout for Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Strang would go on to win the second event held at the track in December of 1909 when he drove his Fiat powered racer to a five mile win at an average speed of 9l.8l mph. He also ran a quarter mile on the main straight at 111.86.

We are not totally convinced the talented mechanical engineer Ray Harroun actually won the first Indianapolis 500 but we do know that his accomplishments in the world of wheels and aeronautics were outstanding.

A fair lass offers her hanky and heartfelt wishes of Godspeed to the smoking racers on this 1909 Indianapolis Motor Speedway program cover. Note the International flavor of the flags hung across the track. From its inception Car Fisher proclaimed the Speedway to be the “Greatest Race Course In The World”.
